About Michio

Hi, I’m Michio, a Japanese otaku who has been visiting Akihabara for more than 20 years. My interests include anime, games, building PCs, and Japanese idol music. I created Akihabara Field Guide by Michio to help visitors find experiences that match their own interests.

Why I write this guide

A famous shop or a busy building is not automatically the right place for you. What matters is what you want to do there: play an arcade game, browse figures, explore a particular interest, or simply spend time walking through the neighborhood.

I want to help you make those choices. My approach combines practical information with my own experiences and opinions, so you can decide where to spend your time and what to try.

More than a shopping trip

Shopping is one part of Akihabara. This guide also looks at its streets, food, games, and the cultures around anime, PCs, and Japanese idol music. You do not need to know every series or collect anything to enjoy spending time here.

For me, the daytime streets are part of the experience: the buildings and signs, the people passing through, and the walk between one destination and the next. I hope this guide helps you leave time for that, too.

What Michio’s Tip means

The highlighted Michio’s Tip sections are where you will find my personal advice: how I suggest choosing a game, exploring a building, or making time for the streets. These are recommendations from my perspective, rather than rules that every visitor needs to follow.

How I handle information

I distinguish my own experiences and opinions from information supplied by shops and other official sources. Where details can change, such as opening hours or shop locations, I include relevant official links and note when the information was checked.

Photos show places as they looked when they were taken. Displays, available games, and shop details can change, so check the linked official information when planning a visit.

Whether this is your first visit or you already have a particular interest in Akihabara, my aim is to help you choose a visit that feels worthwhile to you.
